A Night Attack On An Enemy Convoy Off The French Coast By Motor Gun Boats Of The Royal Navy 1943 A view of an enemy ship, hit with an exploding shell, with a motor gun boat of the Royal Navy in the foreground, signed Peter Scott, 370mm x 280mm, acrylic on board, framed, with inscription plaque. Estimate £ 400-600 Sir Peter Markham Scott, C.H., C.B.E., D.S.C. (1909-1989) was the only son of Captain R.F. Scott, of Antarctic fame, and served in the Second World War with the Royal Navy. He served first in destroyers in the North Atlantic but later moved to command a group of Steam Gun Boats against German E-boats in the English Channel, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for ´´skill and gallantry in action with enemy light forces´´ (London Gazette 1.6.1943). The scene in the painting was based on his War-time experiences. After the War he continued his artistic career, as well as developing an interest in ornithology, founding the Severn Wildfowl Trust (now the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Provenance: Given to Captain R.P. Pratt, C.B.E., by the Artist.
