Pair: Captain A.D. Raitt, Royal West Surrey Regiment Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, one clasp, Relief of Ladysmith (Capt: A.D. Raitt. R.W. Surr. Rgt.); Jubilee 1897, silver, ´Lieut. A.D. Raitt, R.W. Surr: Rgt.´, engraved in serif capitals, minor edge bruising, therefore very fine, mounted as originally worn, with Queen Victoria South Africa 1900 Chocolate Tin, complete with original contents; a leather wallet with the initials ´A D R´ and the date ´21.1.1900´ in metal fastened to the cover, (2) photographs, one of the recipient´s grave giving him as ´killed in action 21st January 1900´ with the following original documentation: - Commission appointing Arthur Douglas Raitt as Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion King´s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, dated 26.2.1887, with original stamped envelope - Commission appointing Arthur Douglas Raitt as Second Lieutenant, Royal West Surrey Regiment, dated 21.6.1890 Estimate £ 800-1,000 Captain Arthur Douglas Raitt, born 1869; educated at St. Alban´´s School and at the United Services College, Westward Ho; commissioned Second Lieutenant 3rd Battalion King´´s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 1890; transferred as Lieutenant 2nd Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment the following year; Captain 1898; served with his battalion in South Africa from October 1899 and was present at the battle of Colenso; he was killed in action at Spearman´´s Camp, 21.1.1900, when the Regiment lost 1 Officer and 4 men killed, 5 Officers and 31 men wounded; The Last Post by Dooner gives Raitt as being killed in action on the Upper Tugela, 1.1.1900 A.D. Raitt´´s name is inscribed on a tablet in his old college at Westward Ho; it is also engraved on a tablet at Guildford, erected by his comrades in memory of all ranks of the Royal West Surrey Regiment who fell during the conflict.
