Bengough) f) Africa Service Medal (110479 G.C. Bengough), the Campaign Medals all officially named, edge bruising to M.M., therefore very fine (6) Estimate £ 800-1,000 M.M. London Gazette 18.2.1943 No. 110479 Sapper Geoffrey Cornall Bengough, South African Forces ´´In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period May 1942 to October 1942.´´ The Recommendation, dated 16.10.1942, states: ´´During the period July to October, 1942, Sapper Bengough was employed on unarmoured Bulldozers in the forward areas. He has shown exceptional devotion to duty, remaining on his machine during bombing attacks and artillery bombardments until ordered to take cover. He has consistently done more than his share at work by continuing when his co-operator was indisposed and has looked after his machine with more than the normal care and servicing expected of him.´´ 110479 Geoffrey Cornell Bengough, M.M. served with the South African Engineer Corps, as part of the 32nd South African Road Maintenance Company during the Second World War. Originally recommended for the Military Medal, this was changed to the British Empire Medal as the recommendation proceeded up the chain of command, before reverting back to the M.M.
