Auction: 8009 - Great Britain Stamps & Postal History
Lot: 1558A
Great Britain Postal Stationery 1844 (c.) piece of silk thread paper, measuring 225x185mm, with central impression of the 1d. pink, large red "specimen" handstamp below, folded into the shape of a letter sheet and unaddressed, but cancelled by superb strike of the Royston "658" numeral in black, the lower-right surface of the paper clearly showing shadowy impressions of two horizontal pairs from the 1847-54 Embossed issue (1/- or 10d. values); some splitting along the folds but in no way detracting from the appearance of this extraordinary item. Note: This might be an official trial to determine the possibility of faking impressions of embossed stamps on paper (the heads of two of the ´stamps´ appear to be embossed).
