New Caledonia surcharged their French Colonial issues from 24th June 1892 and thereafter surcharged additional values as and when required. The diagonal surcharge reading "nlle. calédonie" was originally locally made from copper and this type I handstamp shows a characteristic break in the second "e" of "caledonie" and a small bar to first "E" than found in the type II surcharge. Type I is much the rarer of the two types
