British Guiana Covers and Cancellations Inland Mail 1868 (8 Nov.) envelope from Demerara to Mahaicony, bearing 1861 perf. 12 1/2 4c. pale blue 3rd. setting Type E cancelled with a large part strike of the Crowned circle "paid/at/demerara" (T&H PD2, S.G. Type CC6, Proud PD2), the reverse with two despatch c.d.s. (T&H Fig. 13); the envelope and adhesive with some stains and other faults, nevertheless the sole example of this handstamp used as a cancellation on cover. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: An impression of the S.G. Type CC1 Demerara Crowned circle handstamp is recorded in the G.P.O. proof book for 1 March 1856 though no example has been recorded. A further handstamp of the S.G. Type CC6, as used in the above lot, is recorded in the proof book on 17 February 1866. Only a few strikes on loose stamps have been recorded other than the usage on the cover offered in this lot. It has been suggested that it may have been used as an emergency measure during a brief period when the "A03" obliterator was mislaid or damaged
