An Officer´s Epaulettes of the Madras Infantry A good pair of epaulettes, with WivR cypher within the gilt crescents, finely-embroidered silver crowns on the gold lace straps, boxed bullions and lace fastenings, the gilt buttons bearing a crown above the number 48 within a strap inscribed REGIMENT and surrounded by a bayleaf wreath, in their shaped unlined tin See illustration Note: The pattern of the buttons conforms exactly to the description of those of the 48th Madras Native Infantry. They differ from those of the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment, which at that date displayed the battle-honours "PENINSULA" and "TALAVERA". Estimate £ 300-450
