London Gazette 11.12.1945 Mr. George Henry Read, Commissioned Gunner, Royal Navy ´For distinguished service during the War in Europe.´ Lieutenant George Henry Read, D.S.C., born Hastings, Sussex, 1901; enlisted in the Royal Navy as Boy Second Class, 14.10.1916; Ordinary Seaman 1.8.1918; advanced to Petty Officer, 22.2.1927; Acting Gunner 1.4.1928; Commissioned Gunner 1.4.1938; posted in that capacity to H.M.S. Diomede (Cruiser), America and West Indies Fleet, 30.7.1940; posted to H.M.S. Devonshire (Cruiser), 15.10.1943, and was serving in her when she formed part of the escort for the aircraft carriers Formidable and Indefatigable when they carried out air attacks on the Tirpitz, in Kaafjord, Norway, July 1944; in December of the same year Devonshire escorted the Carrier Trumpeter during minelaying operations off Norway, during which the she came under heavy attack by JU88 torpedo bombers, one of which Devonshire managed to shoot down with close range armament; Lieutenant 24.6.1946; retired 28.1.1951, after 35 years continued service.
