A First Day of the Somme Casualty Group of Three to Major F.E. Naish, 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, Who Led ´D´ Company in the Assault Where He Was Wounded in Both Legs and When Half of the Attacking Force Was Lost in No-Man´s Land From Sweeping Enemy Machine Gun Fire From Thiepval Spur 1914-15 Star (Major F.E. Naish York. & Lanc. R.); British War and Victory Medals (Major F.E. Naish.), good very fine or better, the trio a post 1921 issue (3) Estimate £ 200-250 Major Frank Ernest Naish, native of Sheffield; commissioned Temporary Lieutenant 9th (Service Battalion) York and Lancaster Regiment, 24.9.1914; advanced Temporary Major 12.12.1914; served during the Great War with the regiment in the French Theatre of War from, 27.8.1915; and was Officer Commanding "D" Company when the 9th Battalion took part in the first day of the Battle of the Somme as part of, ´70th Brigade, 8th and 23rd Divisions: Attack on Ovillers - followed 8th K.O.Y.L.I. and 8th York and Lancaster - almost half of attacking force lost in No Man´s Land by machine gun fire from Thiepval Spur. War Diary records out of 25 officers and 736 other ranks, just 180 returned.´ (British Battalions on the Somme, R. Westlake, refers); Naish was severely wounded in the attack, as a record of the proceedings when he faced the Medical Board show, ´On July 1st 1916 at Aveluy, France, during advance he came under machine gun fire and was wounded´, in both legs; transferred to Labour Corps, Salonika, 31.7.1917; relinquished commission 1.9.1921.
