A Great War Trio to Gallipoli Casualty Lieutenant L.G. Stenning, Essex Regiment 1914-15 Star (Lieut. L.G. Stenning. Essex R.); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. L.G. Stenning.), extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 240-280 Lieutenant Leslie Gerald Stenning, Commissioned Second Lieutenant, 6th (Territorial) Battalion, October 1913; promoted Lieutenant, October 1914; served with the Regiment in the Dardanelles Operation, 1915; wounded in both legs, 13.8.1915, carried by two of his men ´under a rain of bullets and shells two miles to a place of safety´ (letter from the recipient to his parents [N.B. not included with lot] refers), and taken to Alexandria; transferred to the Hospital Ship Soudan for England, but contracted dysentery only a day away from England and died of a result of his wounds, 1.9.1915. Lieutenant Stenning is buried in Ilford Cemetery, Essex. His brother, Second Lieutenant Sidney Nelson Stenning, was also wounded in the Dardanelles, 3.9.1915, whilst serving with the Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry; and was killed in action, 21.3.1918, whilst serving with the 189th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
