The Extensive Collection of Sporting Trophies and Memorabilia relating to Wing Commander A.W. Sweeney, Royal Air Force, an A.A.A. Champion who represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland in numerous International Competitions during the 1930s including the 1936 Berlin Olympics a) 1939-1945 Star; Defence and War Medals, these mounted with a France and Germany Star; Coronation 1937; Dunkirk Medal b) Amateur Athletic Association Gold Medals (2), 1938, 1939, both for 100 yards (9ct. Hallmarks for Birmingham 1937 and 1938) c) French Athletic Association (F.F.A.) ´gold´ and enamel medals (4), 1934 100 and 200 meters, 1935 100 meters and relay d) Various athletics prize medals in silver (9) and bronze (14), and plaquettes in silver (2) and bronze (10) e) Köln 1939, prize plaques (3) in silver and enamel (1) and bronze and enamel (2), in cases of issue f) R.A.F. Sweeney´ c) Limerick Amateur Athletic & Bicycle Club, large silver-plated cup, last won by M.A.Sweeney 1887 d) Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club, McDonnell Prize, silver-plated rose bowl, shield on base inscribed ´won by M.A.Sweeney, "Fulmar", 25th August 1906´ e) A silver-plated gong engraved ´1886 Shankill October 17th Won by´, on stand (lot) Estimate £ 800-1,000 Wing Commander Arthur Wellington Sweeney, Royal Air Force, from Wimbledon, Surrey, was commissioned Pilot Officer 28.12.1931; attended Flying Training School, Digby, from 9.1.1932; joined 40 Squadron, Abingdon, 19.12.1932; Flying Officer 28.7.1933; joined 600 Auxiliary Air Force Squadron, Hendon, 20.4.1934; on Staff, Cranwell from 30.3.1936 until the outbreak of war; Flight Lieutenant 28.7.1936; Squadron Leader 1.2.1939; died 27.12.1940, aged 31, while on service on the west coast of Africa, and is buried at Takoradi European Public Cemetery, Ghana. The Takoradi Cemetery contains two First World War and 62 Second World War burials.
