France, Louis XIII (1610-43), The Vow of Louis XIII 1638, silver medal by T Bernard, 72.5mm, draped bust of Louis XIII right, rev. the king kneeling, offering his crown and sceptre, before a statue of the Pieta, signed T Bernard F below (Forrer I,173), very fine, rare Estimate £ 100-120 This large medal commemorates the signing of the Declaration of 10 February 1638 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Louis consecrated ´our Self, the State, our Crown, and our Subjects´ to the Virgin Mary. The Declaration, whose aim was to encourage peace and restore religion, was to be commemorated each year at a High Mass on 15 August, the feast of the Assumption. The event is also celebrated in a painting by Phillippe de Champaigne, now in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Caen.
