Ceylon 1796 (24 Feb.) entire letter from Colombo to Scotland, variously rated and showing "london/ship-lre" h.s. and two Scottish transit d.s. on reverse; the letter written very shortly after the Dutch capitulated is from a soldier serving with a detachment of Infantry and includes "Since the rupture with the Dutch I have been constantly employed on this Island, serving with Detachments of Infantry as there is no Cavalry with the Army and the 16th. Infty. I witnessed the surrender of this Strong Fort & Garrisons, the last Post occupyed by the Dutch in this part of India". A very early and important historical letter Estimate £ 300-400
