x James III, gold Unicorn (18s. 0d.; official weight, 59gr. = 3.82g; 21ct), 3.79g., variety I, Gothic lettering both sides, six pointed star punctuation both sides, i.m. lis, IACOBVS:DEI:GRA: REX:SCOTORVM:, unicorn to left with crown of three lis around neck and hoof on shield, royal title, rev. (lis) EXVRGAT:DES:ET:DISIPENT:INIMICI:E, large wavy star over cross fleury (B. 4 var., fig. 627 var.; St. 121; S. 5262), very fine, rare Estimate £ 1,800-2,000provenance: Bt. Spink 6 August 1986. Although this coin is not exactly the same as any variety described by Burns, it clearly belongs to the earlier issues of James III rather than to those of James IV, as attributed by Mr LaRiviere.
