Sudan The Lado Enclave 1904 (11 Apr.) envelope (complete with contents on "1x sudanese" crested paper) from Capt. Bertram Romilly at Shambe to his father in London, bearing 1pi. cancelled with Khartoum "retta" and showing, on reverse, Khartoum (18.4) and London (5.5) c.d.s.; the contents including "We may have to fight with these other troublesome people from over the border, who are getting more and more uppish, in fact they are the real objects of our expedition but its all so secret i can´t write it down. However, you can guess probably that its trouble with a European Power (not France) whose interests join us down in theses parts. There is a bit of diplomatic business on and the whole affair is rather like Fashoda"; the letter also refers to keeping a diary, which he copied in the letters to his father. The complete diary accompanies the lot and commences on 27 March on board the Nile Boat "Hannak" and ends with the last entry on 30 June in Omdurman, 35 pages written on both sides with much detailed and interesting information.
