London Gazette 13.6.1959 22256484 Warrant Officer Class II David Mitchell, M.M., The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise´s), Territorial Army, The Recommendation states, ´CSM Mitchell has served with the 8th Argylls since 1938, in France, North Africa (where he won the Military Medal) [Sic] Sicily, Italy and Austria, ending the War as a CQMS. In 1949 he rejoined the new Territorial Army, as CQMS of B Company at Campbeltown. In November 1957 he became CSM of that Company. In both capacities he has shown such integrity, cheerfulness, loyalty and hard work that the strength of his company has increased from 39 then to 76 today. This has been the greatest increase of strength in the whole battalion area - almost entirely due to CSM Mitchell´s enthusiastic support for the Territorial Army. Throughout all his service CSM Mitchell has shown himself as an example of the finest type of Highland Volunteer. He has been the corner stone on which has rested all the morale, the discipline and the traditions of service in Kintyre.´ M.M. London Gazette 9.2.1944 No. 2981971 Sergeant David Mitchell, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise´s) (Campbeltown, Argyll), ´For gallant and distinguished services in Italy.´ The Recommendation states, ´During the actions fought South West of Termoli on the 4th and 5th October 1943, this N.C.O. commanded a Mortar Detachment in the area of Bn. H.Q. The area was subjected to frequent heavy and accurate Arty and Mortar fire, it was also atacked on two occasions by enemy infantry and tanks. His Det. remained in action throughout, although at one time his position was fully exposed to enemy infantry at not more than 100x range. Later when the enemy outflanked the position and began to fire into it from the rear, withdrawal was ordered. This N.C.O. brought his gun and Det. out in good order. His steadiness and coolness in action under very trying circumstances was outstanding and the maintainance of his Mortar in action contributed largely to the successful defence of the area for the greater part of the morning.´ Warrant Officer David ´Davie´ Mitchell, M.B.E., M.M., joined 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 1937; he died aged 60 in 1975.
