x Ceylon The "cancelled" Obliterator In August 1861 the printers, Perkins, Bacon & Co., provided six examples of each stamp in their possession to Ormond Hill (eldest son of Rowland Hill) for members of his family. These fascinating stamps and the story behind their appearance, have been fully described by Peter Jaffé in his book "cancelled" by Perkins Bacon. 1857 watermark Star, imperf 1/9d. green, cut to shape, cancelled by part light strike of the "cancelled" obliterator towards upper left. This stamp is from position 6 in the vertical block of six and the lower right corner has been cut away and replaced by a fragment of stamp with the obliterator from position 1. Extremely rare, only two other complete examples are recorded, one of which is in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen. S.G. 11, £7000. Photo Estimate £ 500-600provenance: Robson Lowe Peter Jaffé
