x Victoria Covers and Cancellations 1857 (Sept.) brown envelope from Heathcote "Per R M S Emeu" to Scotland, bearing 1854-55 Woodblock 6d. (2) cancelled "49" and showing London Paid c.d.s. (7/12) alongside, despatch and two other d.s. on reverse. Photo Estimate £ 150-200Note: The "Emeu", on its 14th homeward voyage, was routed direct to Suez but struck on the Guttal el Bunna Reef in the Red Sea 120 miles from Jeddah, on 22nd October 1857. Capt. Gough and the Admiralty took the Marseilles portion of the mails and set off in an arab boat. They found the P&O steamer "Madras" on 18th November and reach Suez the following day. The "Emeu" was refloated on 23rd October and the mail proceeded by the Long Sea route arriving at Southampton on 18th November. The mail taken by "Madras" arrived at GPO London on 7th December.
