x Victoria Covers and Cancellations 1855 (3 Jan.) envelope registered from Melbourne per the "Madras" on the last of the early P.&O. Contract Mails to England, bearing 1854 octagonal 1/- (small faults) and 1854 (Dec.) Registered 1/- (fine) each cancelled with barred oval "1", showing Melbourne oval d.s. on face and with two U.K. transit c.d.s. on reverse; the envelope a little soiled though possibly the earliest recorded date of use of the Registered 1/-, on a foreign destination letter, issued only five weeks previously.
