Tasmania 1840 (13 Feb.) entire letter from Conniston on the Tamar river to Edinburgh, the letter refers to a friend of the writer, John Borthwick, who had arrived in Van Diemen´s Land as a free man and obtained work as a gardener, however he was convicted of damaging fruit trees belonging to a Mr. Day in 1846 and sentenced to two years hard labour, he absconded but was recaptured within days and given an additional two years for his trouble!
