TRANSVAAL 1872-74 Postal Stationery Envelopes Printed by P. Davis and Son at Pietermaritzburg 1874 Second Issue 6d. ultramarine proof impression on piece of laid paper (143x82mm., ruled on reverse), marked "5,000 Nov. 6 /73" in pencil; some creases and ragged hole at centre, though the only known proof item relating to any of the Davis envelopes. P.F.S.A. Certificate (1999) Estimate £ 200-250Note: The 6d. "matrix die" was evidently lost after the first envelopes were delivered as in late 1873 Messrs. Davis used the 3d. die, with the figures and words indicating the value altered to "6" and "ZES" respectively, to print a further 5,000 envelopes. The date quoted on the above proof is a month before the first batch of the second type of envelope was delivered on 2 December. This die, sent by Otto with the plates for the 3d. duty, is not the die from which those plates were made as there is no "spur" on the left leg of the eagle
