TRANSVAAL 1870-74 Typographed by J.P. Borrius at Potchefstroom. S.G. 20-23, 25-37 Covers 1873 (29 Mar.) envelope from Pretoria to "Cronstad" (Kroonstad), Orange Free State, bearing 1/- yellow-green marginal pair on thin, soft, semi-transparent paper neatly cancelled with target obliterator in blue-grey ink and with despatch c.d.s. in the same ink alongside, Potchefstroom transit c.d.s. for 30 March ("30" inverted) on reverse; the envelope with tear partially across face panel, and some other faults, though a unique franking with a Borrius 1/- pair. P.F.S.A. Certificate (1959). Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500Note: The half-ounce letter rate to a destination in southern Africa, in this case Kroonstad in the Orange Free State was 6d. It would seem improbable that this letter weighed between 11/2 and 2 ounces, and possible therefore that the sender paid a late fee, i.e. this was a double letter rate on which the postage would have been 1/- and the late fee the same amount again. An alternative explanation is that this was a double rate letter for which both ZAR and OFS postage was charged. The ZAR GPO was accused at this time in a letter to a newspaper of failing to implement the provisions of the postal conventions with the neighbouring states and charging double postage
