Charles I, Aberystwyth – Dyfi Furnace mint (1648/9), Halfcrown, 13.93g., king in armour holding sword upright, on tall lean horse with upright head, in the style of Tower type 5, square plume behind, reads MAG BRIT FRAN ET HI, rev. oval garnished shield, large plume above, m.m. crown (JGB 788 (same dies); N.2351; S.2908) the surface rather porous on obverse, lightly double struck on reverse, otherwise good fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 1,500-2,000PROVENANCE: Thames Find, 1995 Baldwin´s Auctions no.14, 14 October 1997, lot 414 On 6 March 1646/7 Edmund Goodere, Bushell´s partner in the Cardiganshire mines, petitioned the House of Lords for permission to reopen the Aberystwyth mint, but at premises between Talybont and Machynlleth due to the siege-damage to the castle at Aberystwyth. As before, the Tower Mint provided dies and workmen and the subsequent very small output, distinguished by the crown mintmark and the Welsh plumes on the reverse, may have been made late in 1648. The King´s execution on 30 January 1648/9 was soon followed by closure of the mint, and its dies and equipment were surrendered to a parliamentary representative on 23 February, Besly, ´Coins and Medals of the English Civil War´, p.97.
