Charles I, group III, (i) impression in lead taken from a counterfeit halfcrown reverse die, 52.41g., oval garnished shield, two pellets after REGNO, m.m. triangle (JGB 1271 (this piece); cf. N.2111; cf. S.2775); (ii) contemporary forgery of a Halfcrown, 11.30g., struck in base silver from false dies of good style, type 3a2, king in armour on unadorned horse striding left, reads MAG BRIT FRA ET HI, rev. oval garnished shield, m.m. triangle (JGB 1188 (same dies); BNJ 1984, pl.8, no.8 (same dies); c.f. N.2211; cf. S.2775) the first very fine, the second on a small flan, scratched on both sides, fine (2) Estimate £ 50-100The forger´s die from which the first impression was taken, was found about 1837 during the re-fronting of the former Bellstone House, Shrewsbury. It was exhibited at the British Numismatic Society in 1938, and in 1939 was presented to the Shrewsbury Museum. It seems likely that lead impressions of it were made between 1920 and 1939. The second piece is of very similar style and workmanship to the contemporary type 4 imitation of a York Halfcrown, N.2312; S.2866, cf. BNJ 1984, p.232, and pl.8, no.7. Also lot 154 below
