Scotland, Charles I, Earl of Traquair (d.1659), AR counter, 29 mm (c. 1635), shield of the Earl of Traquair dividing two double triangles rev. a triangle from the apex of which is suspended a pair of scales (CP.96/4; MI.i,275/76), very fine, rare Estimate £ 150-180Sir John Stewart, first Earl of Traquair (d. 1659), lord high treasurer of Scotland (1636-41) and privy councillor. Impeached by Parliament, 1641, and pardoned by Charles I. In 1647 he raised a regiment of horse to attempt the rescue of Charles I; taken prisoner at Preston but released by Cromwell.
