A Russian Infantry Helmet Plate A Crimean-War period plate of the 26th Regiment, of regulation pattern, the lower part originally incised with number 96 and subsequently covered with a plaque mounted with numerals 2 and 6, (one wing of the Eagle refixed, fixing-loops to reverse probably replacements) See illustration Estimate £ 120-180According to the vendor, the practice was adopted in the mid-19th Century Russian Army, for reasons of economy, of "recycling" helmet-plates of the 1833 pattern (which had the Regimental number incised in the lower part) by covering the original number with a plaque bearing another number and reissuing the plate to another regiment.
