Lieutenant John Hotine, born 1891; educated at the University of London; Temporary Second Lieutenant 9th (Service) Battalion Essex Regiment, 16.12.1914; served in the Great War with the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment, attached Machine Gun Corps on the Western Front from March 1916; Temporary Lieutenant 6.7.1916; wounded at Laventre 29.5.1916, "the officer referred to was shot in the foot while on the parapet of his trench. He fell [hitting his head] and was dazed" (Medical Board Report refers); as a consequence of Shell shock and somnambulism, he received a wound gratuity of £250, 11.7.1917 and subsequently resigned his commission 18.10.1917.
