A Peninsular War and Waterloo Pair to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Clerke, Bt., 52nd Foot Military General Service 1793-1814, four clasps, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Toulouse (Sir W.H. Clerke, Bart. Lieut. 52nd Foot.); Waterloo 1815 (Lieut. Wm. Henry Clerke, 1st Batt. 52nd Reg. Foot.), with contemporary clip and hinge/bar suspension, contact marks to first, very fine, otherwise nearly extremely fine, in an old and slightly damaged fitted case. (2) Estimate £ 4,000-4,500Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Henry Clerke, Bt., born in London 13.09.1793, eldest son of the Rev. W.H. Clerke, 8th Baronet; joined the 89th Foot as Ensign, transferred to the 52nd Oxfordshire (and Buckinghamshire) Regiment with the rank of Lieutenant in 1811. Sailed for the Peninsula, served at Nivelle 10.11.1813, Nive 9-13.12.1813, Orthes 27.2.1814, and Toulouse 10.04.1814. Present in the operations of 1815, and joined the Army of Occupation following service at Waterloo. Promoted Captain,1822, Sir William at some stage transferred to the 47th Regiment, and eventually promoted Lieutenant Colonel (on half pay). Appointed a Sheriff for Flintshire in 1848 and died at Heath House, Aston on Clun, on 16.02.1861. Provenance Sotheby´s, 25.07.1991, lot 299
