Sergeant Major Ernest Fowles, born Bracknell, Berkshire, 1887; served in the Grenadier Guards 1909-1912 before joining the Royal Flying Corps 27.6.1912; during the Great War he served in France from 13.2.1916 to 9.7.1917 and again from 23.5.1918 to 15.2.1919; advanced to Sergeant Major (Drill Instructor), and transferred to the Royal Air Force; discharged 24.8.1921 and immediately joined the British South African Police at Banket, Southern Rhodesia.
