An Officer´s Plaid Brooch of the 72nd Highlanders A white metal disc, 3 7/8in. diameter, finely engraved with a princely coronet, thistles, acanthus-leaves, two large scrolls inscribed respectively HINDOOSTAN and CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, and a small scroll below inscribed SEVASTOPOL, central ornament of pink facetted glass or quartz See illustration Estimate £ 300-400The addition of the SEVASTOPOL scroll to this brooch indicates a date of c.1856-1860. It may however be an older piece to which the honour has been added retrospectively. After the CENTRAL INDIA battle-honour was granted in the early 1860s, the engraving design was modified to the pattern of the brooch at Lot 48 below.
