An Officer´s Plaid Brooch of the 72nd Highlanders A white metal disc, 3 7/8in. diameter, engraved with a princely coronet, Thistles, acanthus leaves, a long scroll inscribed HINDOOSTAN above the pale facetted glass or quartz ornament, and another scroll below inscribed CAPE OF GOOD HOPE above initials HM, unusual two-pin fixing to reverse See illustration Estimate £ 300-400The 72nd Highlanders did not serve in the Peninsula or at Waterloo. They therefore acquired no battle-honours until 1836, when they were awarded CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, shortly followed by HINDOOSTAN the following year. Their next award was SEVASTOPOL in 1855. The initials HM may be those of Horace Musgrave, who was commissioned in 1863, although one would have expected the Sevastopol battle-honour to have been added to plaid brooches by that date.
