London Gazette 17.2.1916 Major Frederick Charles Gunning Campbell, M.C. born 11.8.1887; commissioned as Second Lieutenant Seaforth Highlanders 19.1.1907; Lieutenant 29.2.1908; attached 40 Pathans, Indian Army, 17.3.1908; during the Great War served with the 40 Pathans in France and Belgium, and in East Africa (wounded; M.C.; M.I.D.); Captain 1.9.1915; Major 19.1.1922; retired 21.8.1930 The Second Battle of Ypres The 40th Pathans, together with the 1st Manchester Regiment and the 47th Sikhs, formed the front line of the Jullundur Brigade in the opening attack north of Ypres 26.4.1916. The pace of their initial advance was very fast, but 300 yards from the start line the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Rennick, was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Campbell was with him, and managed to get him to shelter in a ditch. Enemy fire then began to take its toll and the attack faltered, the Regiment suffering 320 casualties.
