Indian Mutiny 1857-58, no clasps (Capt. F. Young, 24th Madras N.I.), unit partly officially corrected, extremely fine Estimate £ 400-450General Francis Young; Ensign 24th Madras Native Infantry, 1837; Lieutenant 1840; Captain 1848; on field service in Bengal with Rifle Company since 1857; received the thanks of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal ´for a successful pursuit of a body of sepoy rebels in Behar in June 1858 on which occasion he with 9 of his men crossed the Poon Poon river in a flooded state and killed with his own hands 2 of the sepoy rebels who had remained behind to dispute the passage of the ford, in a hand-to-hand encounter´ (Army Lists refers); posted Officer Commanding Second Battalion Nair Brigade in Travencore, 1860; Major Madras Staff Corps, 1861; Brevet Colonel 1868; rose to General 1889.
