Shonk, Essex Regiment India General Service 1895-1902, two clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 (2383 Sergt H.Shonk 2nd Bn Essex Regt); Queen´s South Africa, four clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (Clr. Sjt Essex Regt.); British War and Victory Medals (Q.M.& Lieut. H.E. Shonk); Army Long Service & G.C., E.VII.R. (C. Sjt.), very fine or better, I.G.S. rare to regiment (5) Estimate £ 400-450 Captain Henry Enoch Shonk, enlisted in the Essex Regiment at Romford 1.8.1888 and served 17 years in Cyprus, India (which included service with 12 British Field Hospital in 1897 Frontier Operations), Burma, South Africa, Egypt and Palestine before being commissioned early in the Great War while Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2/5th Battalion; he served in Egypt and Palestine which included the battles of Numani, Gaza, Beersheba, the Jordan Valley and the capture of Jerusalem; Captain Shonk stayed with the 2/5th Essex until on age limit 16.9.1926 after 38 years with the Regular Army and 10 years as Quarter-Master in the Territorial Army.
