A Second War ´Immediate´ Gustav Line M.M. Group of Five to Signalman E. Shackleton, Royal Corps of Signals Military Medal, G.VI.R. (557797 Sgln. E. Shackleton. R. Signals.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Italy Star; War Medal; nearly extremely fine (5) Estimate £ 700-900 M.M. London Gazette 26.10.1944 No. 557797 Signalman Eric Shackleton, Royal Corps of Signals (Hoylake, Cheshire). The Recommendation states ´This man was W/T operator in the 28, Inf. Bde. Control Post at the Boat Assembly position during the initial stages of the crossing of the river Gari on the night 11/12 May. His action is specially commendable when the control post received a direct hit killing instantly three officers one Sjt. and two sgmn. and wrecking all line communication. With these conditions around he continued to man his 22 W/T/ set in a perfectly calm manner, reporting all information back to Bde. H.Q. He thus provided the last vital link of communication between Bde. H.Q. and the river area which was so imperative at this period. He continued calmly to maintain these communications until the Bns were across the river and he was called in the following day.´
