This N.C.O. was untiring in his exertions in maintaining communications throughout ten days mobile operations. When shelled out of one station, he calmly selected another - this happened not once, but many times - and he was mainly responsible for maintaining touch between advanced signal posts and battalions.´ (21.3.- 1.4.1918 between St Quentin and Domart-sur-La-Luce) M.M. (Huddersfield) 107435 Sergeant George William Stockdale, enlisted 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment; served in the Great War on the Western Front with 6th, 3rd and 27th Divisional Signal Companies, September 1914 - February 1916; transferred to Royal Engineers August 1915; joined 20th Divisional Signals Company February 1916, and served continuously with 60th Infantry Brigade throughout the rest of his Great War service; ´He did good work in the Ypres salient in the early part of 1916 and afterwards throughout the battle of the Somme (where he gained the Military Medal) particularly at Guillemont and in front of Le Transloy In the summer of 1917 he was largely responsible for the very successful forward communications of his Brigade in the Ypres offensive doing splendid work at the capture of Langemarck and in the successful attack on Eagle Trench. In the Autumn of 1917 he again showed to great advantage in the attack in the front of Cambrai and in the subsequent German counter offensive he gained a bar to his Military Medal for fearless conduct at a very critical time. During the German offensive in March 1918 his Brigade was, with the Division, in close reserve on the St. Quentin front and subsequently was engaged in twelve days continuous fighting of the most severe nature. Sgt. Stockdale rose to the occasion , working unceasingly against almost hopeless difficulties [D.C.M.].´ [Major A.S. Brace´s letter refers]. Discharged 21.10.1920.
