M.C. London Gazette 16.9.1918 T./2nd Lt. John Henry Lay, R.E. ´For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When enemy shell fire was breaking communication he went through a heavy barrage to the test point containing the greatest number of lines, and took control of the test station so efficiently that, if one line was broken he had another ready for use. He continued thus under heavy enemy fire for a week, and successfully maintained communications during that time. He showed great courage and determination.´ Warrant Officer Class II John Henry Lay, M.B.E., M.C., served with 3rd Battalion County of London Yeomanry during the Great War in Gallipoli (Dardanelles) 14.8.1915-11.11.1915; Egypt 11.4.1915-13.8.1915 and 12.11.1915-23.12.1915; served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force 25.5.1916-18.9.1916; served with the Royal Engineers on the Western Front 19.7.1917-11.11.1918; Acting Lieutenant Royal Engineers 1.8.1918; re-engaged for the Second War with the Royal Signals Territorial Army.
