Henry IV (1399-1413), heavy coinage, Noble, 7.71g., London, type Ib, king standing facing in ship, holding sword and shield with new arms of three lis in French quarters, crescent on rudder, henric di gra rex angl z franc dns hib z aq, rev. floriated cross with lis at ends, h (double punched) in centre, double saltire stops, m.m. cross pattée on reverse only (Schneider 194 (same obv. die); N.1336(b); S.1706), rather double struck on obverse, otherwise a neat round provenanced piece, very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 7,000-8,000 provenance: W L Raynes, 15 February 1950, lot 26 Spink Numismatic Circular, September 1972, no.8263. It is curious that on several heavy noble reverse dies the central h has been double punched into the die. Schneider suggested that on his coin, Schneider 194, the underlying letter might be an R, but it does appear, in every case, to be another h.
