Lot: 351

†Prince Edward Island, cut and countermarked 8 Reales, Carlos IV, 1805 TH, Mexico City, 22.08g., with regular shaped central hole with smooth edge, rim neither decorated nor bevelled, and a small sun countermark on the king's forehead, composed of ten triangles (Byrne (repr.) pp.23-6; Ch.PE1A2; de Cl. & Wh.2; H&W.37a), rim dents above head and below date, about very fine, rare provenance : Glendining, 27 November 1974, lot 76 (realised £780) Possibly a contemporary merchant's copy, but most authorities agree that there is no definite way of distinguishing official issues from local contemporary copies. Both circulated for ten years on an equal and recognised basis after the government tried unsuccessfully to withdraw them, accordingly collectors usually regard them as of equal value.
