Austrian Aviation Memorabilia A bronze or brass medallion, 21/2 in. (6.5cm) diameter, by GURSCHNER, the obverse bearing an escutcheon inscribed FÜR DIE ÖSTERR, LUFTFLOTTE, superimposed on the Imperial double-headed Eagle, the reverse struck with a "Taube" monoplane flying towards the rising sun and inscription VIRIBUS-UNITIS; and a small gilt medal, 1 1/8 in. (30mm) diameter, the obverse bearing the image of the Emperor Franz-Josef, the reverse inscribed ERINNERUNG AN DIE VORFÜHRUNG DES ZEPPELIN'SCHEN LUFTSCHIFFES VOR SR. MAJESTÄT KAISER FRANZ JOSEF 1 IN BREGENZ AUGUST 1909 (2) Estimate £ 100-150 The 26 February 1914 issue of "The Aeroplane", in its article on foreign military air services, noted that the Austrian Military aviation corps had been formed into a battalion of four companies, based in Vienna, Krakow, Sarajevo and Gaerz, and had 24 aircraft in commission.
