Tomlinson born in Sheffield; served as Able Seaman in Discovery during the first British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Expedition 1929-30; the object of the expedition was to explore the unknown area of Antarctic coastline between Kaiser Willhelm II Land and Coats Land, a stretch of 2,500 miles; Discovery left Cape Town 19.10.1929, sighted several previously uncharted islands and mountain ranges including Douglas Islands, MacRobertson Land, Proclamation Island, and Scott Mountains, and reached Australia, 31.3.1930
