†A Victorian Officer's Presentation Sword of the Royal Artillery, with good 341/4 in. fullered blade, by HENRY WILKINSON (Nº 5367), etched with foliate decoration, Royal Arms, VR cypher and Thunderbolt, the latter divided to enclose inscription PRESENTED TO GENTLEMAN CADET WILLIAM GEORGE MARTIN ON OBTAINING HIS COMMISSION FROM THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY AUGUST 1854 FOR HIS EXEMPLARY CONDUCT WHILE AT THE INSTITUTION, regulation plated three-bar hilt and fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard; together with an assortment of photocopy extracts from various official publications, relating to the career of W.G. Martin (2) Estimate £ 450-700 William George Martin was posted to the Crimea immediately after commissioning, arriving there in December 1854, but apparently left for Malta the following month. He retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1885. The sword for Exemplary Conduct was presented annually from 1836 onwards.
