Lot: 522

CSA. CT-38. $2. September 2, 1861. (R10). Contemporary Counterfeit. No. 2991, plate 8. Meade-Overton. Judah P. Benjamin at left, the South striking down the Union at center. This contemporary counterfeit offered here, apparently unique, was discovered by Stephen Goldsmith of Spink in 2012. It is a well-executed lithographed copy of the somewhat crude genuine Type 38. Close examination reveals that the Meade and Overton signatures are forgeries. The shape of Benjamin's lips and hairline differs from genuine notes, while details in the value medallions are blurred, notably in the four arcs around the borders. PCGS Very Fine 20. Special thanks to Mr. Pierre Fricke for the research on this lot.
