A Great War C.B.E. Group of Five to Captain G. P. Leith, Royal Navy, Order of the British Empire, Commander's (C.B.E.) 1st type, Military Division, neck Badge, silver-gilt and enamel, enamel damage to one arm, nearly very fine, in Garrard, London case of issue; Queen's South Africa, no clasp (Lieut., R.N., H.M.S. Terpsichore); Africa General Service, one clasp, Jubaland (Lieut., R.N., H.M.S. Terpsichore); British War and Victory Medals (Capt., R.N.), good very fine and better except where stated, second and third mounted as worn, together with the related group of five miniature awards, the A.G.S. with Q.S.A. obverse It is recorded that duplicates of the Q.S.A. and A.G.S. were awarded to Captain Leith. The British War and Victory Medals are probably later issues. (10) Estimate £ 350-450 C.B.E. London Gazette 27.5.1919 The Recommendation states 'H.M.S. Armadale Castle. Has done valuable work from 16 Jan. 1918 in taking charge of 5 Atlantic convoys (N. Atlantic, four S. Atlantic including one Rio de Janeiro) comprising 54 ships with no loss.' Greece, Royal Order of the Redeemer, Third Class, awarded by the King of the Hellenes, 1914 Captain George Percy Leith C.B.E. of Walmer, Kent, joined the Royal Navy in 1892 and became a Midshipman in 1894, attaining the rank of Lieutenant, 1900; served in Jubaland, in the operation against the Ogaden Somalis; commended for service in organising and supervising the West River and Delta Patrol, 1911 whilst on the China Station; promoted Commander, 1913 and served in the Naval Mission to Greece for which service he was later awarded the Royal Order of the Redeemer; twice commended for his services in the Great War, firstly for trying to ram a submarine, September 1916, and secondly for attempting to tow and keep afloat H.M.S. Falmouth, which had been hit by four torpedoes from German submarines U66 and U63; for the remainder of the War he was involved in duties for which he was awarded the C.B.E.
