London Gazette 26.1.1917 Captain George Macdonald Brown, Hertfordshire Regiment. 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. Grasping the situation and taking on his duties as Brigade Major at a critical time, he carried out invaluable work and showed marked courage and ability.'
Captain George Macdonald 'Donald' Brown, M.C., joined the Hertford Regiment 1910, Second Lieutenant 1912; Captain July 1915; the 1st Bn. Hertford Regiment was heavily engaged during the First Battle of the Somme where they arrived in late August. Captain Brown's obiturary appeared in The Bucks Herald 14.1.1944: 'Capt. George Macdonald (Donald) Brown P.A.S.I., F.A.I., M.C., valuer, estate agent and auctioneer, of the well known Tring, Aylesbury, Berkhamstead and Hemel Hempstead firm of Messr. W. Brown and Co., died unexpectedly at his home, Morgans farm, Drayton Beauchamp, on Monday morning at the age of 55....As a Captain in the Hertfordshire Regiment brigaded with the Guards under the Earl of Cavan, in the 1914 War, Captain Brown was awarded the Military Cross, after most efficiently carrying on, while wounded, the duties of his superior Staff officers disabled by enemy shell fire.'
