The Egypt 1882-89 Medal to Lieutenant Colonel G.E. Hale, D.S.O., Royal Army Medical Corps, Recommended for the Victoria Cross for Gallantry during the Tonhon Expedition 1889 Egypt 1882-89, undated (Surgn. G.E. Hale. Med: Staff.), scratches on obverse, edge bruising and loose suspension, otherwise very fine Estimate £ 500-600 Lieutenant Colonel George Ernest Hale D.S.O. (1861-1933), born at Eastbourne and educated at Cheltenham College; entered the army 31.1.1885; as Surgeon Captain served with the Sudan Frontier Force 1885-86, and was present at the action of Ginnis (Khedive's Star); served in Burma 1889-91 (medal and two clasps), and was Mentioned in Despatches for the Pounkham Expedition, 1889; for the Tonhon Expedition he was recommended for a Victoria Cross, but recieved the thanks of the Government instead; in the Wuntho Expedition 1891and was once again Mentioned in Despatches for special gallantry in the field (D.S.O. London Gazette 18.3.1892 'in recognition of services against the Lun Saing Tonhon Kachins, and in the Wuntho District, Upper Burma', Surgeon, Medical Staff); Surgeon Major 1897; served in South Africa 1900-1902 as Officer Commanding, Imperial Yeomany Bearer Company, and Senior Medical Officer, General Mahon's Column (Mentioned in Lord Robert's Despatches); later was O.C., 23 Bearer Company, and S.M.O. Colonel Sitwell's Column (Q.S.A. , three clasps, and K.S.A., two clasps); appointed Honorary Surgeon to the Viceroy of India 1908; retired 1912; re-employed 7.6.1915, and joined the B.E.F. as O.C., 45th Brigade, 15th Scottish Division, and was present at the Battle of Loos
