An Extremely Rare and Unusual Crimea Medal to Lieutenant Colonel R. De Salis' Charger 'Drummer Boy', who carried the 8th Hussars Officer in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava, 25.10.1854 and throughout the latter part of the Crimean War. Crimea 1854-56, no clasps, edge privately engraved 'Drummerboy By Retriever F. Wexford 1848', reverse privately engraved 'Carried Lt. Col. De Salis 8th Hussars', edge bruising, very fine Estimate £ 300-500 Lieutenant General Rudolph De Salis, C.B. (1811-80), second son of Jerome Fane, Count De Salis; joined 8th Hussars as Cornet 1830; rose to Major 1847; embarked in the H.T. 'Mary Anne' for the Crimea 1854; rode in the Charge 25.10.1854; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1854; De Salis commanded the Regiment during the latter part of the Crimean War and commanded the Cavalry on the expedition to Kertch, May 1855; commanded the Regiment during the Indian Mutiny in Rajputana and Cental India, 1858-59; he commanded the Brigades in the battles of Kotah-ke-Serai, Sindwaho and Koorwye, and was in command of the troops at Boordah; in recognition for his services in India he was awarded the C.B. ; Lieutenant General, 1877.
