Great Britain 1840 One Penny Black Plate 11 MC, very large margins (portion of adjoining stamp at left), on entire letter addressed to a glazier in Hollington, tied by fine light strike of the black Maltese Cross, the address panel with manuscript “Refused” and showing superb strikes of the Uttoxeter double-arc datestamp at left in red (dated 18 February 1841) and at right in black (dated 31 March 1841, additionally tying the adhesive), the content tells that the letter was a demand for legal fees incurred whilst serving a summons on the glazier and his brother, clearly unimpressed by his refusal to accept the letter the sender has noted in pencil “Send Ct. Summons”; the adhesive with scuffing and some small imperfections at top but in no way detracting from the outstanding appearance of this extraordinary item. Photo Estimate £ 1,000-1,200
