Great Britain 1840 One Penny Black Plate 5 KJ, margins all round, on entire from Leeds to Nottingham, dated 1842 (23 Feb.), the adhesive, which is tied by a ink manuscript ´cross´, clearly showing a light but discernible strike of the black Maltese Cross, underneath in manuscript “used before” and the words “Post Paid” at lower left crossed through, a superb strike of the black handstruck “2d.” of Leeds alongside the adhesive, the reverse with Leeds and Nottingham double-arc datestamps. A most attractive example of an unsuccessful, and illegal, attempt at fraudulent re-use – examples of which are more usually seen with a manuscript rather than handstruck due marking. A major rarity. R.P.S. Certificate (1970). Photo
