Auction: 4003 - Stamps & Covers of the World featuring Italy and Italian States
Lot: 1028
Great Britain 1841 One Penny Red-Brown — SB, margins all round (portion of adjoining stamp at right) on neat clean entire addressed to Alan Stevenson, Engineer for the Northern Lighthouses in Edinburgh, tied by fine light strike of the black "177" Scottish numeral of Harris, the address panel with superb strike of the black "harris" double-arc datestamp (the centre showing only the year slug "1846" inverted), the reverse with Portree datestamp of 8 April 1846; fine, extremely attractive and very rare. Note: Direct reference is made to the Harris office by Mackay - the office was run by Kenneth Morrison who was eventually dismissed in September 1846, amongst his misdemeanours were letters delayed, missorted or lost entirely, and "hardly ever used the dated stamp (which) was found lying in a corner of the office covered in rust and without the figures"!. An exhibtion showpiece. Photo
